Alfresco is a strong product in the Document Management arena. It has a robust set of features within a flexible, standards-based platform (e.g., JSR 170, WebDAV, REST,...). It's a Java application and all contect is XML. Amazingly, it's an open-source product that uses many common open-source Java modules (Hibernate, JBPM). Users can access files via the typical browser login, or drag-drop from Windows desktop. In addition there are NFS, FTP and WebDAV access routes to/from Alfresco. Alfresco will dynamically update / add users as LDAP changes occur.

Alfresco’s stated goal is “bringing enterprise content management (ECM) capabilities to open source.” The Alfresco team brings content management experience from Documentum, Business Objects, and SeeBeyond. Alfresco WCM 2.0 is an optional add-on which can be installed on top of the core platform to enable Web Content Management capabilities.

Pricing: The “Enterprise” version is the product sold; it is a tested and supported release, while the "Community” version contains the same functionality under an Open Source license. The Community product is only supported by the community. Enterprise pricing: ~$15K/year for 4-hour response to a support request or ~$20K/year for 2-hour response.
